Cava me up.

The Asian consortium representing Japan, Taiwan, Korea and honorary member Turkey headed out to Freixenet to check out their cava winery tour. Ready to submerge yourself in a world of bubbles? You think that was my typical corniness but, not this time. Freixenet has topped me in this instance. You win this time Freixenet. This time...

On to the pictorial tour!

A trip isn't complete unless there's at least one instance of trying to decipher the, at times, cryptic Renfe destination points.

Just in case you weren't sure where it was, a nice arrow guided you to the entrance. Oh don't mind the giant Freixenet labelled building that's about 50 meters from this sign. I feel like I'm in America.

In front of the Freixenet building there were a variety of odd vehicles parked out in front.

What's that white thing on the back of the scooter?

Okay I understand this being written in Catalan, Spanish and English but why German? Are the Germans extra rowdy and troublemakers? Why not French? Do the French avoid cava because it's a bastardization of their holy nectar, Champagne? Don't get it.

The entrance.

Old school Freixenet ad. I wish I was part of that marketing team.

Marketer 1: Hey we need a new ad to promote our cava.
Marketer 2: How about a picture of some beautiful people popping open Freixenet cava at a party?
Marketer 1: That sounds great but we need something more exciting. Something that distinguishes Freixenet as the leading cava brand.
Marketer 2: I got it! A picture of a child holding a Freixenet bottle.
Marketer 3: Wouldn't that associate cava with underage drinking or little boys?
Marketer 2:  No, it's brilliant. Trust me.

Freixenet Cava bottle lamp. I need to buy this for my apartment. It just exudes class. The ladies lady would love it.

I was going to take a picture where I strategically position my hips at the base of the bottle but I decided not to when I realized that I turn 30 this year and such actions are not indicative of an adult. Just kidding. I took said picture.

Ticket and welcome card. The tour started with a 10 minute video introducing us to Freixenet and then it was off to the cava caves. Cava does not mean cave in Spanish. Actually, it is a Greek term typically used to refer to high end table wine. In Latin it does mean cave so I guess in the end it kinda does mean cave. Confused yet? Here.Cava

A device used in the production of cava prior to the complete mechanization of the process.

More talk about the old school production process. Basically everything was done by hand and it took a lot of work.

How drunk do you want to get?

Apparently for F1 and other moto celebrations they use the Rehoboam size.

Don't know when they'd ever use the 15L bottle. Giants?

Our "train" tour through the current production facility.

When I saw this all I could think about was our Operations class. Do they follow lean manufacturing? The 6 S's? I momentarily thought Operations was pretty neat. Momentarily.

Now this is what I came for. Cava tasting. Today's selection was the Cordon Negro Reserve Brut.

I should try to enjoy this cava and note the hints of fresh citrus, crisp green apple and some lemon.

Oops. Drank it in two gulps.

Freixenet also makes this special white wine for sushi. White wine and sushi. The combination makes sense because white wine and seafood go well together but still kinda doesn't make sense. Like Hawaiian Pizza. Pineapple with ham? Ugh.

The hallway leading to the exit basically laid out a history of drunkenness.

Egyptians getting their drink on. Buzzed-walk like an Egyptian.

Greeks getting liquored up before they go invent geometry and Corinthian columns.

Romans doing their thing. Drinking and eating. Ah, Roman gluttony.

The original homebrew masters, Belgium monks.

The Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria and the often forgotten ship, Alcoholica.

The conquistadors conquistaing some liquor.

Victorian alcoholism. Nothing like some industrial revolution and wine.

And that's it folks. That post was too long and I'm beat. Time to get my own drink on.

I just got back from Andorra and all I got...

was tons of great snowboarding, fun with classmates and sore muscles. The first day of snowboarding was absolutely spectacular. Great conditions only offset by 5-10 minute lift wait times. What's a weekend trip with your classmates without some apres ski. I can't remember what was more fun. The NSFW photo hunt game where you had to find the 5 differences between two pictures or commenting on the utter lack of bartending skills by the hotel bartenders.

This is a bar with no bartenders. How is that possible? I don't know. How is it possible that Maggie Gylenhaal is a Hollywood actress?

Life is full of unaswered questions. Anyways, the NSFW photo hunt was particularly funny. What do you get when you have 6 MBA students crowded around an arcade machine trying to figure out the differences between two risque photos of scantily clad and mostly exposed women?  I don't know because I wasn't there to participate in such immature activities. I was sipping white wine and discussing the role of the IMF and World Bank in developing countries.

The conditions on the slopes on Sunday was pretty craptacular. 40mph winds, limited visibility and my body being fairly tired from the previous day. Conditions ripe for a major wipeout. What kind of blogger would I be to throw in foreshadowing like that and leave you hanging? Of course I ate it. I was going down the mountain and got thrown off balance by a Mach 3 wind gust. Murphy's Law made sure that I was going toeside so that I fell backwards down the mountain (I ride goofy) My body almost completed a backflip but my head and shoulders got in the way of the mountain and I just landed on my back. Good times.

Besides that everything was great fun. With March coming up there's really only 3 months left before everyone is off to their internships and then exchange programs. I keep mentioning it but the time is really flying by and it just makes me realize how important it is to make sure I make the most of my time here at ESADE. Pretty soon I'll be staring at some Powerpoint presentation or Excel model daydreaming about my days at ESADE and I never want to have a doubt in my head that I didn't participate enough in school or social activities. With that I just signed on to be part of a Benchmarking Task Force and am taking on a new role within the ESADE Consulting Club so I should be keeping myself busy for the remainder of Term 2 and 3. Party on Wayne. Party on Garth.

I'm in your tubez providing you interweb

More internet stuff found thanks to Digg

and for those who follow the alternative belief of evolution.

Don't get all riled up believers of creationism. I watched this video at the American Museum of Natural History in New York about how evolution and creationism aren't mutually exclusive. In a way I feel the same way. Science supports evolution and the big bang theory but in a way it is kinda odd to think that suddenly there was this big explosion that just happened and everything sprung up out of that. Maybe there is something out there....*toodle loodle toodle loodle -twilight zone sounds*

Techie stuff

The Mobile World Congress is currently going on in Barcelona and our Marketing, Technology/Media, and Entrepreneurship Clubs organized a speaker panel featuring some of the industry leaders in the mobile/tech world. After hearing them talk about the future of mobile in the developed and developing world and some of the new technology that will be in our hands within the next five years, sparked a renewed interest in the current ongoings within the industry. I read engadget, gizmodo, wired and other techie sites but never with much fervor. That may just change now. Anyways, stumbled across a TED presentation by the developer of Bing Maps and had to share it. The integration of user sourced imagery, microsoft imagery and even real time video is really impressive.

My MBA is teaching me to "lean" the wedding process

So a very painful part of weddings can be the preparation of wedding invitations. It's a monotonous process that can take hours to do especially with 180+ invitations to send out. So I've been contemplating how to go through this process in the most efficient way possible. It's been racking my brains. Not really. But my Operations class did now teach me that the batch and queue process is less efficient than a one piece flow production.

I'm gonna organize this wedding under the principles of lean manufacturing. Seito, seison, seiketsu, seiri and shitsuke.  Call it the Toyota of weddings. I think my SO wants the Rolls Royce of weddings though.

Test taking in Spain

Anytime something goes wrong, is delayed, or leaves us at a loss of words we usually blame it on the Spanish culture.  Today's Finance midterm was another one of those "Only in Spain" moments. Finance is one of those topics that could have ridiculously hard midterms or fairly easy ones. This midterm was no different and the lack of information regarding the difficulty level was enough to cause anxiety. I always feel that the couple of minutes before a test is handed out is one of those really tense moments in life.  The culmination of your hours of studying will either pay dividends or leave you thinking you should've just gone to a bar and drank excessively because the end result would've been the same. It's almost like you're on the precipice of a cliff. The test being handed to you is someone pushing you off the cliff. Doing well on it is like realizing you can actually fly. Doing poorly on it is realizing that you're human and you're about to faceplant with the ground thats rushing towards you at lightning speed. Can you tell how much I actually detest tests? You'd think I would just study harder so that I'd have more flying moments but I like to live dangerously. Danger is my 2nd middle name after T****i.*

*I always feel that censoring words just makes them funnier. Plus, who knows maybe the person actually was trying to write some non-vulgar phrases and some editor just decided to censor it. I love t*ts could've actually been I love tots. I mean I love tater tots. Maybe some editor decided to unleash his loathing on tater tots by censoring my words.  F**k this party could've been a partygoer trying to Funk this party. *

Anyways, so around 9:05am our teacher finally arrives and states "We've lost your finance exams" Everyone's thinking "Yes" we all pass but it turns out lost really meant forgot it in another building. How dare you play with our emotions. Damn you Penelope Cruz looking Finance professor. So we actually started at 9:30. 30 minutes delayed. I guess that's not too bad under Spanish standards. 15% unemployment is also not too bad under Spanish standards so yeah....

Week ahead

Looking at the week ahead.

Tuesday: Finance exam
Wednesday: Global Context of Management presentation and Picasso Museum visit with spanish class
Friday: Operations Case Study/kick off ESADE Benchmarking consulting project
Friday Night: MBASA Chinese New Year
Saturday: Bball, Chinese New Year dinner #2, Classmates' bday aka "It's gonna be one of those nights"
Sunday: Wake up around 3pm and then try to do some work. Chinese New Year dinner #3
Monday: Strategy Case Study

I'd say it's a good mixture of work and fun.

Last Friday the results of our Exchange Program were released and I was awarded University of Michigan: Ross School of Business Winter Exchange as my destination so my time at ESADE has been cut short by three months. (Sidenote: 4 of my classmates will be at University of Chicago:Booth and 2 of my classmates at Northwestern:Kellogg so I can guarantee a couple weekends "networking" in Chicago) My perspective has really changed so I'm gonna enjoy the crap out of my remaining time here. Por supuesto that involves a good amount of studying too. Uh-huh. I promise.

Oh time where doth thou go.

I wish I had more time to write posts for this blog. I'm going to have to resort to guiding you to a new website found by a friend of mine. Found not founded. Key difference.

Only classy ones. I promise.

asianLadies

This was on their site to fantasize promote the type of relationships that will materialize by using ClassyAsianLadies.com. I just don't know what to say. I find the site absolutely hilarious and appalling at the same time. I'm going to create ClassyAsianMen.com. Yup. Just checked and the URL is still available. Cash money here I come.
